Goannas play out thrilling tie

Gippsland Goannas Over-70's played host to Essendon Barkley Street at Duncan Cameron Reserve in Traralgon for what played out to be a thrilling tie match.
The match, hosted by Traralgon Rovers Cricket Club, was played in sunny conditions with a light wind and after the captains toss, the Essendon skipper sent the Goannas in.

Warren Dummett (17), Ian Gibson (15), Neil Meredith (27n/o), Donald Cameron (16n/o), Kelvin Bond (17n/o) were major contributors to the score of 138, which skipper Meredith said was par on a third-day turf wicket on a top dressed oval.
Essendon bowled and fielded tightly, demonstrated by modes of dismissal being four bowled, one LBW, one stumped and two run outs.
After a well catered lunch, Ian Southall bowling well, induced a skied catch, which was well taken by keeper Gibson. After that the Goannas found wickets hard to come by.
After 20 overs the Essendon score was two for 75, pushing on to two for 112 after 30 overs. It looked like in the final 10 overs they would be difficult to contain, but Southall (2/17) and Meredith (0/22) came back to finish their spells putting the brakes on some good batters. Bond (1/30) also bowled well for the maximum eight overs.
The match came down to the wire, where Barrie Nunn, Bond and Andrew Smith bowled the last eight overs.
A flurry of runouts and a bit of nervous batting and bowling meant that the result would be close. Essendon needed five runs to win in Smith's final over with the bowler finally putting the ball where it was difficult to hit. The result was a tie, both teams making 138 runs in their respective 40 overs.
Neil Meredith was awarded by the opposing captain as the Goannas' best player for his excellent all-round performance. Neil also made special mention of Heather Farley's great fielding effort and vocal support.
