Garfield Bowling Club hosted the first of two Big Bash tournaments for the season on Sunday.
The Big Bash is a format similar to that seen on Bowls TV, where teams play five games of five ends. After this, the top four teams play off in finals.
This event, being held during the Spring Racing Carnival, was themed around the Melbourne Cup. All teams had names of significant Cup winners.
Garfield put on another beautiful day for the event, with sun, light cloud and a gentle breeze. It was enjoyed by all.
After the five rounds of play, four teams stood out on top of the ladder. The semi finals and a grand final followed.
The two winners of the semi-finals were the teams who finished third and fourth, showing once again that finals pressure does strange things to people.
The winners of the day were the "Phar Lap" team, bearing the name of the 1930s great stayer. This team included Alan White from Garfield, skip Angus McGillivray from Neerim District and Joe Lenders, also from Garfield.
They defeated the "Brew" team, consisting of the Burden Park pair Russell Matthews and Peter Bendzius (skip), along with Keysborough player Rick Bendzius.
