3 min read

Garfield enjoyed a great week on the green, claiming victory in each of the three matches they played.
Midweek
Division three: Garfield defeated Yarragon 83/42
On Tuesday, Garfield's division three midweek side played host to Yarragon. The day was very hot and both sides struggled to get through the game. Garfield won two rinks and the match overall by 83 shots to 42.
The team of Margaret Hyam, Gillian Harper, Richard Ross and skip Helene Newton started on an even keel with their opponents, the score being tied at four shots all after seven ends.
Seven shots on the next two ends saw the Yarragon team create a gap, but the Garfielders valiantly set about bridging it, and were only two shots down at the 17th end.
Then it all got too much for them and they fell away to lose by 13 shots to 20.
Gwen Fabris' team, consisting of Steve Hyam, Cheryl Breteler and Luke Monckton, played nip-and-tuck with their opposition and were just one shot up after 13 ends.
But then the wheels fell off for the team from Yarragon and Garfield stormed home to win by 26 shots to 16.
Jan Johnson, Malcolm Newham, Bob Lamport and skip Lexi Taylor had a day out.
They were 15 shots to the good before their opponents scored, then 26 shots before they scored again, and 40 shots before they scored for the third and last time. The Garfield team won handsomely by 44 shots to 6.
The side remains in third place on the ladder. Games against first and second placed sides before the end of the season will sort out who finishes where.
Saturday
Division five: Garfield (2) defeated Morwell (4) 64/46
On Saturday, Garfield's division five side visited Morwell to play under their roof. A match of ups and downs saw close overall scoring for most of the day, but Garfield came away with an all-rinks win by 64 shots to 46.
The team of Lois King, Cheryl Breteler, Brian Fox and skip Damian Brick started out slowly and were down by five shots after just six ends.
They got them back over the next three ends, and then were never led again, winning by 18 shots to 13.
Gordon Moxey's team, consisting of Margaret Hyam, Gerry Wakefield and Helene Newton, on the other hand, were five shots up after six ends and continued to pile on the shots, with a healthy final score of 27 shots to 16.
Henry Breteler, Maureen Lamport, Lexi Taylor and skip Gwen Fabris played a close game with their opponents all day with the scores tied twice. Five shots on the 17th end gave the Garfielders the edge to win the game by 19 shots to 17.
This good win has moved Garfield to second place on the ladder, with just three games left to play.
Division three: Garfield defeated Yinnar 94/55
The div three side stayed home and waited for the side from faraway Yinnar to come to them. The Garfielders dominated across the board, and won overall by 94 shots to 55.
Tom Cleary's team, consisting of Frank Prins, Len Preece and Joe Lenders, lost seven shots on the first three ends of the game; but then they got going and had matched their opponents before they scored again.
After that it was up and down between the teams, with the home team coming out on top by 20 shots to 16.
The team of Graeme Burton, Bob Lamport, Richard Ross and skip Shane Oliver jumped out to lead by eight shots before their opponents had opened their account.
The rest of the game was more or less even, but the early lead proved enough and the Garfielders won by 25 shots to 19.
The team of Les Pumphrey, Gary Payne, Steve Bassed and skip Nick Henwood, had a similar day to Shane's team. They were up by six shots early and turned that into a win by 20 shots to 13.
Alan Wilson, Alan White, Gary Helmore and skip Stephen Whyte were well in front of their opposition all day, easily winning by 29 shots to 17.
Garfield remains undefeated on top of the ladder.
