Trade students celebrated

Outstanding students at the West Gippsland Trade Alliance were recognised at the annual Young People's Excellence Awards.
More than 80 people recently attended the presentations at the Baw Baw Skills Centre, held face-to-face for the first time since pre-COVID.
The function recognised young people that made a positive contribution to their training, workplace and future.


The awards were open to all VET Delivered in School Students (VDSS), apprentices, trainees, school based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBAT) and those aged between 15 and 21 that have undertaken some aspect of training or skill development through the West Gippsland Trade Training Alliance in the previous 12 months.
The Alliance is made of partners from registered training organisations including Apprenticeship Group Australia (AGA), TAFE Gippsland, Community College Gippsland, Food for Thought Restaurant (Drouin Secondary College) and all Baw Baw Shire secondary colleges.
The awards sponsors - including Baw Baw Latrobe LLEN - acknowledged the importance of up-skilling young people in the local region to help meet the future needs of local business and industry.
Award winners were:-
VDSS - agriculture: Harrison Dodd; animal studies: Sophie McGrath, automotive: Emily O'Farrell, building and construction carpentry: Jesse Smith, community services: Joshua Harrington, cookery: Cassandra Matthews, electrotechnology: Jocelyn Heenan, integrated technology: Ethan McKinnell, plumbing: Cameron Wildblood, salon assistant: Grace Wenczel, sport and recreation: Jack Stone, workplace skills: Jessiah Collins.
Apprenticeship building and construction third year: Ayden Ramm.
Apprenticeship second year electrotechnology: Hayden McNeil.
SBAT: Ethan Norbury.
Trainee - certificate III dairy production: Brodie Cook.
