The Labertouche and District Men's Shed members has upgraded its wood splitting machine with the aim to enhance its community service.
The men's group, specialises in cutting, wood splitting and sale of wood for firewood or other purposes at a discounted rate to the elderly and service regular customers within the community.
President Geoff Lee said the group was formed with a purpose to serve the nearby communities.
The group recently acquired an electric start motor to assist with the wood splitting operations.
A $3500 Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal (FRRR) grant enabled the group to upgrade its wood splitter to an electric start. The former motor was a physically straining pull-start motor and Mr Lee said the new motor was aimed at helping with a quick start and less physical requirement.
Mr Lee, said the 20 active members appreciated this grant.
Another member, Jim Armstrong, revealed another $30,000 grant also was acquired to help the group construct a men's shed for tool storage and workshop which would be opened later in the year.
Mr Lee said members participated in wood cutting, splitting and selling to nearby communities.
The income from wood sales helped to purchase additional tools.
Mr Armstrong said members were honoured to serve the community with their wood needs.
Their work also involves furniture restoration and vehicle repairs.
Mr Lee said the work ensured good therapy for members. "It helps with a healthy mental health in this age."
Mr Lee said all members shared either physical or mental issues they faced when they gathered for their meetings.
The men's shed group was formed 13 years ago. Their members meet for a Saturday dinner once a month with other men of the area always invited to join.
Annually, the shed generates $5000 to help with tool purchases for upgrade and assist communities.
Mr Lee said with the machine motor upgrade, they would be able to entice more men in the community to become members.
"The membership numbers have been static of late, getting volunteers for community service is not easy," he said.
