A guide to job opportunities that will be provided in wind power generation in Gippsland has been released by the state government.
It states coal workers and students could reskill for careers in the offshore wind industry with as little as a few months training.
The Transition Opportunities; Coal to Offshore Wind guide says more than half of the workers at the Yallourn power station that is due to close in 2028 had skills and qualifications that apply in both coal and wind industries.
For example, a mechanical fitter at a coal fired power station would become a wind turbine technician with six months training and other jobs that could easily transition were engineer, boilermaker, plant operator and power worker.
The report outlines the training pathways, many of which will be available locally through Gippsland TAFE and Federation University.
Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D'Ambrosio said the workers were critical to the construction, operation and maintenance of Victoria's offshore wind generation that would create as many as 15,000 jobs during construction stages and 7500 ongoing jobs.
She said the Victorian Energy Jobs Plan to be released next year would further detail how the energy workforce will be developed to support the transition to renewable energy.
Federation University vice-chancellor Professor Duncan Bentley said that as the state's leading regional university it was proud to be involved in providing a pipeline of highly skilled workers for workforce opportunities in renewable energy in the future.
