The Hallora Marathon is kicking into gear for its latest iteration as the big day is getting closer - and those thinking about participating might want to get in fast.
The ninth edition of the event looks set to be the biggest yet, with limited spots remaining in all events.
Runners and cyclists of all ages and experience levels will set out on Sunday, December 8 across a variety of distances all to raise money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. This year
The day already looks set to smash its attendance record set last year, when more than 660 people hit the ground running.
Event co-organiser Daniel Pratt said the signs were pointing towards hitting the upper limit on participation.
"I think it's looking right on track to be hitting 750, but that's all we can do," he said.
"Huge, huge numbers for those big events which is really good. It's looking like it's going to be our biggest event again."
Distances available range from a full 42km marathon down to a 5km event and even a kids dash. While the longer distances will begin their day at Hallora, all events will converge and finish at Western Park in Warragul, running around the oval on the grass and to the finish line.
Organisers are aiming to get "a good buzz" around Western Park this year, with community marquees, food trucks, coffee vans and a barbeque run by Pharaoh's Angels for the West Gippsland Hospital oncology unit.
The Hallora Marathon raised more than $40,000 last year and has now ticked over $100,000 across its history.
What originally began as a passion project for Daniel to run a marathon and raise a little bit of money has quickly taken on a life of its own, engaging the community and seeing significant growth with every passing year.
"It's very humbling. I'm very proud of it, where it's come from, from just me wanting to run a marathon," Daniel said.
"I thought we'd get a few people to join me every year and raise a couple of thousand dollars maybe but I would have not believed it if you told me it's got to this now."
Daniel paid tribute to the committee behind the event and special mention of his partner Laura Pratt, who he said had been a driving force behind the scenes.
He said they were still on the hunt for some race day volunteers, encouraging anyone who wanted to help out to get in touch.
"We always tend to have good luck with finding volunteers. That's the beauty of this community, I think. People jump out, even brand new people, just to help out."
