Will the Exhibition Hall be demolished?

The fate of Warragul Exhibition Hall could be decided tomorrow afternoon.

Baw Baw Shire councillors will be provided an officer report with a recommendation to permanently close and demolish the building.
Built in the 1950s, the Howitt St hall was immediately shut in mid-December after being deemed a public safety risk, with temporary fencing and front bracing installed.
Structural issues first came to light in late 2023, with the building's southwest corner walls found to be leaning 22mm to 44mm out of alignment. A year later, after removal of trees, more severe brick cracking was found and alignment had deteriorated to 79mm.
The report, which will be presented at tomorrow night's council meeting, estimates council would need to invest $2 million to $2.6 million in the community asset.
The price tag includes both critical structural works - cracked and leaning walls, drainage issues and ceiling replacement - and upgrade works to modernise the facility. These include kitchen refurbishment, new appliances, external doors and windows, and toilet and foyer flooring.
The officer report indicates council has invested $217,200 in the past eight years, the hall's annual operating cost was about $12,000 and notes an overall decrease in bookings.
Initially used for poultry exhibitions and affectionately known as "The Chook Shed", the hall was refurbished into a 300-seat venue and was in high demand during the 1970s and 1980s.
Hosting concerts, debutante balls, discos, art shows, book fairs and agricultural show activities, the hall has been the home of the Warragul Playgroup since the 1980s. They group has since announced it had found a new permanent home in Drouin, next to Oak St Kindergarten.
The report noted reduced usage of the hall in recent years due to the emergence of other modern venues and changing community needs. However, notes it "remains a valued community asset".
"While the costs are substantial, restoring and upgrading the facility could revitalise its role in the community, offering a safe and modern venue for diverse activities," the report states. "Council's decision on the proposed actions will determine the hall's future viability as a public space."
If the hall is demolished, it is unclear how council would utilise the site. The recommendation is to "repatriate the site" in the upcoming budget.
The council meeting will be held in the Fountain Room of the West Gippsland Arts Centre tomorrow (Wednesday) at 1pm.
