An estimated 250 people enjoyed playing, spectating or simply having a look at the new $12.8 million Warragul stadium on Sunday.
Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing and Baw Baw Shire mayor Annemarie McCabe cut a ribbon to officially open the new two-court facility at the Warragul Leisure Centre on a day filled with sports clinics, friendly games and family activities.
Ms Shing admitted the official opening could be "the most boring thing the stadium will be used for from this day forward."
However, it still attracted a strong crowd, who heard of strong collaboration to bring a much-needed infrastructure project to fruition.
Attracting a $6.1 million grant from the state government and more than $6.7 million from the shire, Ms Shing said it was "the best of the best as far as project collaboration is concerned."
"It really shows what can be done," she added.
Sunday's official opening didn't offer the first use of the courts. That honour was shared between a three-on-three basketball tournament and NAIDOC Week "Deadly Hoops" match over the school holidays, as well as local basketball and netball games kicking off this term.
The $12.8 million project includes two new indoor courts, spectator seating, new café and kitchen, referee changeroom, first aid room, storage facilities, swim club store, public amenities including a Changing Places changeroom, and improved pedestrian and parking access linking the new and old leisure centre facilities.
"With double the court space, new spectator viewing areas and extra facilities, the stadium expansion has been welcomed by locals, and will increase the opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to participate in a training session or a game," Ms Shing said.
She added the project had created 50 local jobs on site, built more changerooms which was vital to boost female participation and "I can't wait to see this facility loved and used."
The Changing Places changeroom, funded by a $110,000 state government grant, will ensure people with a disability have dignity and inclusion when utilising the venue.
Having watched the building works progress since early 2023, Cr McCabe said "it's so fantastic to see it completed" to mark "an exciting milestone for council".
She said the stadium expansion was one of council's largest ever recreational projects to date.
Whilst a few final touches are yet to be completed, Cr McCabe urged community members to visit and "make the most of this wonderful space."
"I am proud that between council and the state government we can provide these new, modern facilities, furthering opportunities for our local kids and families to take part in sport and get active, close to home," she added.
Cr McCabe also praised Kubale Construction for an "amazing job", noting it was wonderful when local companies could take on major projects.
Warragul District Amateur Basketball Association president Calvin Rees said build it and they will come.
"The stadium isn't just for the old folk, it's for the youngsters coming through," Mr Rees said. "I know it's going to get lots of use."
"I'd love another one guys, we will fill it," he concluded.
Warragul and District Indoor Netball Association president Melinda Debnam said "we're really excited to expand and grow", which the two new courts would make possible.
With some 140 players already competing on Wednesday nights, Ms Debnam labelled the venue "a cornerstone of our community".
"It's a hub for our community for all ages and abilities," she said.
