Warragul Regional College year 12 student Stephanie Apps was awarded $1000 after taking out second prize in the ReFresh Art Award.
Stephanie’s photographic piece “Four” was announced second prize winner at Federation University’s recent open day.
As a result of Stephanie’s success, Warragul Regional College also received $500 towards its visual arts program.
Recognising outstanding young creative talent, Re- Fresh Art Award saw Gippsland Centre for Art and Design (GCAD) at Federation University award $5200 in prize money to Gippsland VCE art students and their schools.
The exhibition was held at GCAD’s Switchback Gallery.
Orbost Secondary College student Ruby Anderssen won first prize for “Cycles of Me” – a work consisting of three self-portraits in watercolour.
A $500 encouragement award was won by Rachel Woodhouse from Sale’s Gippsland Grammar for oil on canvas work “Mavis”.
“The feedback from all students who exhibited was that it was an exciting experience to show their work in a professional gallery,” said Switchback Gallery director Tony Hanning.
“Some of them commented that the simple act of others observing their work in a public space was inspiring.” Gippsland artist and Arts Resource Collective chair Sharon Anderson and John Calabro from “The View From Here” graphics in Traralgon selected the winning works.
Mr Calabro said he was so taken by the expertise and talent in the exhibition that he donated money to enable a fourth prize encouragement award for Shae Berry of Maffra Secondary College.
