Wins up for grabs for Warragul and Drouin in Gippsland League
5 min read

It's a rare occurrence this week in the Gippsland League's round six, with both Warragul and Drouin playing at home.
Both have very winnable matches too in what looks to be a solid weekend of local footy.
Warragul vs Maffra
Warragul welcomes Maffra to Western Park as they look to bounce back from a poor goalkicking performance last week.
The Gulls showed plenty of promise against Traralgon but were simply unable to put any scoreboard pressure on them, kicking a scarcely believable 2.17.
It leaves them at two and three and still nipping at the heels of the top five, despite their poor percentage.
An even more pressing issue for the Gulls, however, is a major injury to senior coach Jed Lamb.
Lamb went down during the second quarter clutching his left leg after an awkward landing, and looks set to spend some time on the sidelines.
It means the Gulls will have to rejig their forward half setup, having now lost the reigning league leading goalkicker.
It continues their rotten luck with injuries this year as Lamb joins players like Mitch Smart and Vinnie Caia in the stands.
They've also lost a contingent of young guns for this week, with Lachlan Smith, Patrick Ireland and Kai MacLean also coming out for Sam Fennell, Bayley Paul, Lucas Monacella and Jordan Murphy.
Regardless, Warragul will still be coming into this one feeling confident they can get a result, given Maffra's year thus far.
The Eagles, who have deployed the youth in an effort to rejuvenate their list, are currently winless from their first five games.
A draw with Bairnsdale, sealed with a goal after the siren, has given them their only points of the year.
They've begun multiple games strongly, but as young teams are liable to do, have had lapses that opponents have jumped on.
It makes this an interesting watch, all things considered.
Were the Gulls at full strength they'd be entering this as solid favourites, but now the question has been asked: can they cover what they've lost and claim their third win of the year?
Time will tell.
Drouin vs Sale
Drouin could perhaps consider themselves the unluckiest team in country footy right now.
The Hawks remain winless after five games, but have lost four of those by single digit margins.
They've been playing with a sense of freedom and belief that has them genuinely challenging every team they meet, but they just haven't been able to put it all together for long enough yet.
It was a similar story last week as they pushed Wonthaggi all the way away from home, even taking the lead towards the end of the final quarter, before two late Power goals left them adrift.
Giving up head starts has also been an issue.
Their last three weeks have seen them on the wrong end of the scoreboard at quarter time, leaving them to expend energy playing catch-up.
They've shown major improvement from some of their matches last year, but a win soon may be needed to really galvanise them and keep spirits high.
Honourable losses can only carry a team's belief so far.
Drouin fans will be hoping the return of Tim Hancock can bolster the side's defence as they continue to look for a win, while Rhys Salter also makes his way into the side.
Coming out are recruit Alex McMillan and Gippsland Power captain Seb Amoroso.
They'll give themselves a red hot chance here against Sale, something that didn't seem at all likely before the beginning of the season.
Last year's runners-up haven't look anywhere near the side they were in 2022, with numerous injuries and departures of key players leaving them an inconsistent unit.
Their one win has been against Maffra, and even then they were given an almighty scare.
Sitting at one and four the season is quickly getting away from them - too many more losses and the top five might just become unreachable.
The Magpies have resisted the urge to bring back forward Brad Dessent after his return in the reserves last week, but will welcome the return of the experienced Kane Martin.
Sale boast a host of much larger bodies than Drouin, but if the Hawks can keep the ball moving with their leg speed and keep it out of the air, watch out.
The Hawks have beaten the Magpies just once in their past 10 meetings, and they won't have many better chances to get them than right here.
Other games
Moe host Traralgon in a battle between two contenders.
The Lions last week finally found their first win at Sale in 21 years, and are one of just two undefeated sides.
Traralgon are also looking comfortable, getting the job done in all but one of their matches this year.
No matter who wins, we'll learn a lot about the current standings.
Morwell takes on the best as Leongatha comes to town.
The Tigers managed to get some momentum going in their indifferent start to the season with a strong win over Maffra last week.
Now they face the toughest challenge in trying to stop the runaway train that is Leongatha.
The Parrots have now won 33 in a row, and have claimed the four points in their last 13 games against Morwell.
They're in imperious form, having won their past three games by 97, 132 and 115 points respectively.
Morwell will need to be at their very best to have a chance here, and even then it might not be enough.
Finally, Wonthaggi makes the longest road trip in Victorian country footy as they head east to take on Bairnsdale.
The Power escaped with four points against Drouin last week as they now sit in fourth at three and two.
Bairnsdale's good start to the season has dissipated with two punishing defeats in as many weeks.
One would think Wonthaggi's a solid lock to finish in finals, meaning fifth spot is entirely up for grabs for someone to take.
A win here and Bairnsdale would certainly feel like they're as good a chance as any.
