Gippsland United's senior men's side have gone down swinging for the second time in as many weeks following a disappointing 0-1 loss to Mazenod at home.
In a tough and at times physical contest United were brought undone by a scrappy second half goal to leave them with two defeats to kick off their 2025 campaign.
For much of the day it was clear there was no love lost between the two teams, with referees handing out a whopping seven yellow cards for dangerous tackles.
Neither side was able to string together many fluent plays for the day, much of the match being a stalemate as Gippsland and Mazenod both desperately searched for a win.
Defence was king for the most part in a game where genuine chances at goal were difficult to create, much less take.
Riley Hamilton, Nathan Lugton and Thomas Ahmadzai were among the stronger United players on the day, showing a composure that some of their teammates at times lacked both with and without the ball.
It was fairly clear from the first whistle that this might not be a game for the spectators, attempted passes into dangerous areas rarely finding their mark.
Heading into half time the scores remained tied at nil-all, both teams no doubt frustrated by their inability to find the all-important goal they needed to break the deadlock.
With proceedings still far from free-flowing in the second half, it would be the visitors who would strike the vital blow, a scrappy forward thrust from Mazenod ending with Jamie Christofilos finding the back of the net, much to the joy of his teammates and the travelling supporters.
From there tensions threatened to boil over at times, particularly after Gippsland players began to take issue with Mazenod's tactics.
The visitors, sensing that the longer the game played out the more their lone goal may be all they needed for the three points, were certainly unafraid to make the most of any injuries that came their way, holding up play for several minutes at a time for treatment.
United took issue with what they perceived as time-wasting tactics, making their complaints known.
Groans of frustration from the pro-United crowd were clear to hear, the Mazenod players finding little sympathy from those in attendance at Baxter Park.
Despite several probes forward Gippsland were unable to find a goal to tie the scores up, the final whistle blowing to the jubilation of Mazenod and the despair of Gippsland.
The loss sees United sitting in 12th place out of 13 at the completion of two rounds. They will now turn their attention to a tough assignment away from home this weekend as they travel to face second-place Hampton East Brighton.
Hampton East Brighton are the new kids on the block in State League Men's 1 South-East following their promotion and will be brimming with confidence following a 4-1 dismantling of Collingwood City on Saturday.
Gippsland United's reserves side, meanwhile, racked up their second win in as many weeks with a strong 3-1 win prior to the seniors.
Jacob Cheney, Daniel Edey and Beau Finlayson were United's goal scorers for the day, while Mitch Jones, Connor McGivern and Julian Colantuono were their best.
The reserves' campaign for a rare threepeat remains on track, United showing no signs of slowing down since their title last season.
