Tough week for Goannas

The Goannas 'seniors', the over 70 team, welcomed the West Gippsland Wombats to the Sale Oval last week for their scheduled round nine game.

It was cool and breezy, but at least the sun was shining as Gordon Cowling won the toss and decided the Goannas would bat first.
Warren Dummett and Garry Rose took the score to 15 before Rose was bowled in the seventh over.
Steve Lincoln joined Dummett, who then retired on 16 after 30 balls. Lincoln (22 ret.) and Murray Moore (24 ret.) took the score to 67 in the 19th over.
Then the rot set in, with the Goannas losing eight wickets while adding just 16 runs.
Dummett returned and was out for 22, Ian Gibson and Lincoln proceeded to take the score beyond 100 before Lincoln was bowled for 32, leaving Gibson unbeaten on eight.
The Goannas' final score of 105 from 32 overs was one of the worst scores recorded by the team in its four-year history.
Michael Newton (3/8) and Rod Pallot (2/15) were the best of the Wombats bowlers.
After a fine lunch of salad rolls the Wombats headed to the crease.
Spider Phillips holed out to Andrew Smith at mid off, there were only six runs scored from the first eight overs, bowled by Cowling and Neil Meredith, and Cowling bowled Gavin Sharp in the 9th over as the Wombats reeled to 2/9.
Moore replaced Cowling and immediately induced a false shot by Keith Houghton, well caught by Garry Rose at mid wicket. The Wombats were in big trouble at 3/18 after 11 overs.
Unfortunately that was the end of the penny section for the Goannas as Pallot, Neil White, Fred Debono, Peter Loos and John Martindale all retired, allowing Newton and Russell Ferguson to see the Wombats home in the 32nd over.
Earlier in the week Gippsland hosted South East at the Sale Cricket Club in the semi final of the 40-over Veterans Cricket Victoria 50s Division 1 Saxon Sports Shield.
Gippsland won the toss and sent South East in. At 3/38 the visitors were on the back foot, thanks to the opening the trio of Steve Rogers, Chris Malone and Paul Hennessy, all bowling to suit the conditions.
At 4/63 (21 overs) Gippsland were well on top but quality batting from Andrew Kahofer (47), Grant Chatfield (52*) and Chris Stacey (30* off 17) as well as some chances squandered by Gippsland saw South East get to a very respectable 5/177.
After a quality afternoon tea Gippsland got to 23 (eight overs) before Simon Forbes was bowled by an absolute 'jaffa' from Tim Cherry. South East further tightened the screws and Gippsland slumped to 5/38 (17 overs).
Anthony Bloomfield (24) and Steve Rogers (16) had a good crack and got the score to 72 (26 overs), before Bloomfield skied one off Cherry.
Gippsland were never really in the hunt after that & finished on 9/124 after their 40 overs.
Best players for each team were Grant Chatfield and new ball off spinner 'Doc' Hennessy, who took 2/11 from his seven overs.
South East went on to play Geelong in Sunday's grand final, where they were defeated by 20 runs.
