Titans topple wobbly Warriors in division four

by Samuel Laffy
Garfield-Tynong (2/76) def. Western Park (72)
There was a dismal sense of déjà vu about Western Park's efforts in their semi final capitulation against Garfield-Tynong, with the Warriors continuing an unwanted streak of falling away badly under the spotlit pressure of a knock-out final.

After a slight delay due to an issue with the sprinkler, the Western Park top order found it nigh on impossible to counter a brilliant opening spell from Glenn Miller, the seamer snaring 4/14 from 10 probing overs.
Forcing the batters to attempt to always lay bat on ball, his scalps included the crucial wicket of Marc Fleming – who has been a dominant force with the bat in division four all summer.
Fleming was scratchy early and succeeded only in under-edging a pull shot onto his stumps, out just two and leaving the scoreboard reading 4/27.
Phill Young (2/18 off 9) and Jack Salan (2/7 from 7) continued to make regular breakthroughs, and it was only thanks to some dedicated efforts from Thomas Wans (13) and Ben Hannan (10) that Western Park had any sort of target to defend.
As it was though, Garfield-Tynong barely broke a sweat chasing the 73 required to seal a grand final berth, with their talented batting line-up – led by Michael Modaffari (28 from 28), Young (13* from 16) and Isaac Braaksma (16* off 15) – taking just 14.1 overs to seal the eight-wicket win.
Jindivick (5/112) def. Iona (111)
Wade Haysom (a dynamic 34 from 43) and Jason Siegel (a watchful 29) had added 42 for the opening partnership to put the Swamp Tigers in a strong position, but against Andrew Pyle (a typically lion-hearted 3/28 from 11) and Rod Huma (3/14 off 10 miserly overs), the rest of the Ionan line-up fell away.
Only James Weitering (10 from 12) was able to make it double figures apart from the openers, and after 48.1 overs the Swamp Tigers were dismissed for the middling score of 111.
However, the Jumping Jacks – in the 18 overs they had to face before stumps – struggled against some impressive new ball bowling from Haysom (1/22) and Weitering (3/31 from 14).
Rod Huma – who's been one of the more reliable batters in the entire division four competition – was trapped in front without scoring.
Tobias Hart (6), Dale Vincent (0), and Robert Wind (0) followed suit, with Jindivick's remaining batters sent into a state of panic as wickets tumbled.
Resuming on day two however, the momentum established by the Swamp Tigers dissipated starkly, with Matt Cheshire (37*) and Rory Payne (a wonderful 53) looking at ease against the Ionan attack.
Building slowly, the pair soon lashed out, hitting a multitude of boundaries to quickly bring down the runs required.
Payne in particular was effective in disrupting the bowling attack, and even though he fell late there was little stopping the Jumping Jacks from claiming victory in the 41st over.
