Warragul basketballer Olliver Muir has qualified for the 12 and under Victorian school’s basketball team, making him one of the best players in the state for his age.
The 11-year-old will play at the Gold Coast in November against some of the country’s best junior basketballers.
Olliver said he didn’t expect to make it after the first day of qualifications but soon proved himself wrong with a strong second day performance.
“It’s pretty hard, there’s a lot of tall kids,” he said.
As one of the smaller players and a bottom-ager, he said it made getting a spot even sweeter. “It’s an awesome feeling to know that you’re in a pretty good team with pretty good coaches and amazing players.”
The qualification didn’t come without hard work, Muir also plays for the Warragul Gladiators and the Dandenong Rangers and says he only has two nights off a week.
“I practice a lot, it’s pretty much what I want to do for life. I’ve been doing it since I was like four and it’s just always been fun to me,” Olliver said.
The young point guard is a key scorer for the Warragul Gladiators where he plays an age group up in the under 14s. With his basketball career well underway again after missing last year, Olliver said he’s glad to be playing with new teammates.
“It was just I guess a little bit boring because I had no team to play with,” he said.
The grade five student’s playstyle is inspired by NBA star Steph Curry and he hopes to play for the Golden State Warriors when he’s older.
