New holes open at Drouin Golf Club

Drouin Golf Club last week officially opened two new holes, a highlight of the Leanne Bambridge Memorial Day.

It was the third running of the annual event, in which golfers come to play a social round to remember Leanne, wife of current Drouin pro, Anthony Bambridge.

Despite an inclement weather forecast, more than 100 players took part in the three person Ambrose event.

Golfers dressed in orange, Leanne’s favourite colour, with many taking the time to design their outfits for the round.

The day marked the opening of the two new holes, with the second and third relocated further down the course.

The course will lose its original practice fairway and first hole to make way for an access road into a new estate.

Drouin Golf Club’s four life members, Anthony Bambridge, Edna Cropley, Rex Greenland and Shane Dwyer were on hand to help open the new holes.

100-year-old Edna took the first putt on the third hole, while Anthony played the first drive on the second, followed by Shane.

Rex cut the ribbon on the second hole and Edna had the honours on the third hole, declaring them open to the cheering crowd.

With some wet weather blowing through early in the day, golfers were carrying their umbrellas to their respective holes for the shotgun start just before 11am but were able to get through relatively dry during the round.

Clear winners on the day were Ryan Hammond, Ryan Radford and Matt Guy, who combined to shoot an 18 under 54.
