Liza's legacy lives on

The legacy of the late Liza Pharaoh has inspired junior netballers to take to the courts in Warragul, raising more than $8200 for West Gippsland Hospital's oncology ward.

Kirsty Brereton said organisers from charity Pharaoh's Secret Angels still had smiles on their faces after 31 junior teams from 13 clubs registered for the second annual Liza Pharaoh Junior Netball Tournament.
"It was amazing," Ms Brereton said. "We were just rapt."
Liza, a life member of Warragul Industrials Football Netball Club, died in 2021 after a long illness. The respected netballer played a club record 382 games, played in and coached multiple premierships and won multiple best and fairest awards.
"She did dedicate much of her life to junior netball," Ms Brereton said. "It's a great way to honour her legacy."
"We just want to keep her love for the game alive."
And, alive it was, with junior netballers enjoying games and showcasing their talents as they set themselves up for the upcoming winter season.
Koo wee rup Netball Club, from the West Gippsland competition, set the standard on the day, taking out the overall club championship.
However, the day's biggest win was raising $8271.
The funds will be donated to the West Gippsland Hospital Supporters group and allocated to the hospital's oncology ward.
Since 2018, Pharaoh's Secret Angels has raised more than $150,000 to boost care for local cancer patients.
Ms Brereton thanked the Warragul and District Netball Association, noting the tournament at the Burke St netball courts wouldn't be possible without their support.
After its success, the countdown is already on for the third annual tournament, with the date set for March 1, 2026.
