Hill End selected for Carlton Draft

by Nicholas Duck
Help is on the way for the Hill End and Grove Rovers after the club was officially selected to participate in this year's Carlton Draft.

The draft is an initiative that sees former AFL stars selected by struggling rural clubs in an effort to give them a boost both on and off the field, with the Rovers set to have a former superstar join the side later this season.
It's been a lean few years for the club's senior football team, who have won just one game across their past two seasons.
Coupled with financial difficulties stemming partly from the club being unable to host netball at their home base in 2023, as well as issues trying to attract prospective recruits, and the club is now hoping the Carlton Draft can give it a boost.
The draft is set to take place on April 30 in Melbourne with the Rovers' pick yet to be determined.
Club president Andrew Tangusso said the club was looking forward to "a really big day for the community."
"We feel it's really about the community. Willow Grove is a small town but the community is massive and the footy and netball club plays a big part in that," he said.
Mr Tangusso credited the club's successful application to football operations manager Matthew van Tillburg, who put in a mountain of work preparing their submission.
"There's a lot of excitement from our board and coaches and our players too," he said.
"Hopefully it's a bolster of hope for them and it's a really good day."
Players on offer for clubs this year include: Tom Hawkins (359 games and 796 goals for Geelong), Brett Deledio (275 games for Richmond and GWS), Matthew Pavlich (353 games and 700 goals for Fremantle), Travis Cloke (256 games and 452 goals for Collingwood and Western Bulldogs) and Will Schofield (194 games for West Coast).
Mr Tangusso said the club were playing their cards close to their chest as to who they might select, but that they were already eyeing off some potential home fixtures in June or July that might suit.
Hill End will be the Mid Gippsland Football Netball league's second consecutive club to have participated in the draft after Toora welcomed Nathan Buckley last year.
The Rovers also join other locally based clubs to have participated including Nilma-Darnum (2023, Nathan Buckley) and Bunyip (2024, Isaac Smith).
Other clubs with a pick this year are Beaufort Football Netball Club (Central Highlands Football League, Victoria), Heathmere Football Netball Club (South West Football netball league, Victoria), Coleambally Football Netball Club (Farrer Football League, New South Wales) and Beverley Redbacks Football Netball Club (Avon Football and Netball Association, Western Australia).
