A taste of Gippsland at the Brownlow

There was a distinctly Gippsland flavour at last week's Brownlow ceremony after both Fremantle's Caleb Serong and Hawthorn's Jai Newcombe's enjoyed strong showings at the AFL's night of nights.
Serong, who played for Warragul locally, finished fourth overall on 28 votes while Newcombe, a former Hallora and Poowong player, ended the night in 10th on 24 votes.
The count caps off a wonderful year for both players.
Serong, 23, secured his second All-Australian blazer and second Doig Medal - otherwise known as Fremantle's best and fairest - following a strong season in the midfield.
It makes him just the fourth Docker to win back to back best and fairests in the club's history.
Serong secured the maximum three votes on seven separate occasions throughout the year, including in three of his first four games.
Newcombe, like the Hawks, began the year slowly before coming home with a wet sail, registering 13 votes in his final nine games.
Newcombe played a large role in the club's mid-year comeback to make their first finals series since 2018, where they were narrowly defeated by Port Adelaide in a semi final.
