Gulls hold on for first win of year
1 min read

The tide turned for Warragul on Saturday when it broke through for its first win for the season holding out a Morwell fightback as the fog descended in the last quarter.

The Gulls’ players and their hardy supporters that had survived a cold Western Park day were celebrating at the siren with an 11-4 to 9-12 win that had been 10 rounds in the making.

The margin may have been only four points but the celebratory singing of the club song for the first time this year had the feel of a premiership win.

It would have been a travesty had the game slipped away.

Warragul had been far the better side in the first half kicking 8-3 to 2-6 to open a 33-point lead, its eight goals equally its highest goal tally in any match this season.

Six of those goals came in the second quarter.

Forwards Brayden Fowler and Will Cole capped off the Gulls control across the ground.

But gradually Morwell clawed its way back into the match.

The Tigers’ defence tightened and they won more of the ball around the contests to limit Warragul to a single goal for the third term while adding four themselves.

By the last change with fog starting to roll in the Gulls’ lead had been cut to 13 points.

Morwell continued to push.

With about 10 minutes remaining it was within less than a goal.

Fowler stepped up again to kick his fifth goal for the day and give some breathing space but the Tigers weren’t done.

Morwell got the margin back to four points again setting the stage for a desperate finish with both teams giving everything they had in a scoreless last couple of minutes.

Warragul’s victory was a terrific comeback after a 20-goal mauling by Sale only seven days earlier.

It was reward on Saturday for contributions from all players.
