The Gippsland Goannas over 50 cricket team made the trip down the highway to Sunbury on Sunday last weekend after completing a considerable amount of ringing around to ensure there was a team available to take the park.
This saw the inclusion of new players in Darian Millington and David Tyrrell.
The forecast was quite gloomy across the state and upon arrival there was a change in wind and a sudden decrease in temperate but from that moment on the weather gods were in the Goannas' favour and a great day formed.
An agreement was made between the Sunbury skipper and the Goannas stand in skipper in Anthony Bloomfield that saw the Goannas take to the crease first.
Bloomfield and Geoff Wells kicked off the innings and Bloomfield gave the team absolutely nothing departing after a poor pull shot in the second over .
Brad McDonald joined Wells and took the score to 46 when McDonald was well caught at slip for a solid 21.
Wells was joined by the debutant Darian Millington and the two proceeded to play in an aggressive manner before Wells fell lbw for a well-compiled 47 with the score on 84.
Pat Spiteri strobe to crease and was hitting the ball sweetly right from his first ball.
Millington was next to depart for 37 after putting together a quickfire 32-run partnership with Spiteri that saw some exceptional running between the wickets.
Steve Rogers joined Spiteri at the crease and these two scored with ease, putting together a fantastic partnership which was only ended when Spiteri retired on 50.
Rodney Jones came to the crease with just six balls remaining in the innings and ensured that he had a red ink at the end of the innings.
The total finished at a very competitive 4/207 with Rogers remaining 40 not out at the close of play.
In reply Sunbury never really got into the game after some exceptional bowling from another debutant in Dave Tyrrell who finished with the fantastic figures of 4/20 from his seven overs.
In the end Sunbury were bowled out in the 39th over with the score at 171 leaving the home side 36 runs short in their chase.
All the bowlers shared in the wickets with Rogers, Jones, Murray Moore, Graham Ingle, Spiteri and Bloomfield each chipping in with a wicket.
There was some good catching by the Gippsland team.
Wells finished the day with a catch and a stumping while keeping wickets. At times throughout the innings it did appear that this may have been his first rodeo behind the stumps, and some were heard to ask him if he was keeping with a pair of symbols instead of wicket keeping gloves.
The club offered a massive thank you to Murray Moore for coming into the side from the over 60s and his partner Diedre for scoring throughout the day.
