The Gippsland Goannas over 50 cricket team were able to get on the park at last, for what turned out to be their last game of the season in the semi final.
The postponed semi final game against the South East Veterans took place at Sale Oval on a very cool Sunday.
Goannas captain Graeme Rankin won the toss and decided to bowl first.
The better bats for South East were Andrew Kahofer (47 run out from 94 balls), Grant Chatfield (52* from 76 balls) and Christian Stacey (30* from 17) in their score of 5/177 from their 40 overs.
Successful bowlers for the Goannas were Steven Rogers (six overs, 1/26), Chris Malone (seven overs, 1/22) and Paul Hennessy (seven overs, 2/11).
Chris Anders had a good day behind the stumps with a catch, a stumping and a run out.
In reply Rankin and Simon Forbes each made 12, with Anthony Bloomfield (24), Rogers (16), Malone (17), John Daddo (9*) and Anders (13*) the best of the batsmen as the Goannas struggled to 124 runs for the loss of nine wickets from their 40 overs.
It was a disappointing season for the Goannas as three of the scheduled seven games did not take place, with two wins and two losses being good enough to make the semi final, which was the Sunday loss to SE Vets, who the Goannas had defeated in round five.
The Goannas over 60 team travelled to Warrandyte for the round 14 game at the weekend.
Although the forecast was for a dry day, there was quite a bit of rain on the trip west, and a few showers during the game.
Acting captain Ray Floyd won the toss and decided to bat, sending Jim Armstrong and Rob Taylor in first. Both retired after 30 balls, Armstrong for 30 runs and Taylor for 18.
Ray Smith (nine) also retired and Col Carmody was the first dismissal, stumped for six when the score was 56.
Mark Brown followed soon after and when Floyd was caught for 10 the score was 3/68.
Bernie Symons (18) and Peter Anton (20) both retired and Neil Meredith was next out, also stumped, for 20 from 25 balls when the score was 4/134.
Chris de Vent and Andy Slevin followed quickly allowing Taylor to return to the crease, joining Ian Gibson as they took the score to 6/155 at the end of the 40 overs.
Taylor was 21 and Gibson nine when the innings ended. The Warrandyte bowling was tight, but luckily they did drop a few catches.
In reply Warrandyte were able to pass the Goannas score in the 40th over, with eight wickets down.
Successful bowlers were Anton (eight overs, 1/33), Symons (six overs, 1/26), Murray Moore (eight overs, 2/23), Brown (three overs, 1/18), Meredith (eight overs, 1/25) and Taylor (4.1 overs, 2/19).
The Goannas will travel to Hamilton for an (unscheduled) game against against a combined Hamilton and South West coast team next weekend, while the over 70 team will play at Sale Oval on Tuesday this week against the West Gippsland Wombats.
Both teams have another game scheduled for early March.
