The week started with a victory and continued that way as Garfield bowlers recorded a club clean sweep.
Midweek
In midweek pennant on Tuesday, Garfield's division three team travelled to Morwell to take on their number two side. Two games with identical - but opposite - results, and a win in a tight third game, saw Garfield come out winners.
Division three: Garfield defeated Morwell (2) 58/54
The team of Keith Sainsbery, Damian Brick, Lexi Taylor and skip Helene Newton won the first end of their game before a drought for the next eight ends. By then, they trailed by 13 shots. Some to and fro after that, including winning the last three ends, had them still down by that 13-shot margin at the end, losing 11/24.
Gwen Fabris' team, consisting of Margaret Hyam, Judy Pocklington and Luke Monckton, had the opposite experience. They started well and were up by 13 shots after 11 ends. Garfield only won three ends after that point, but they were all big ends, matching what Morwell put up in the other seven ends. Three shots on the last end, when the overall pressure was on, drew them back to the 13-shot lead, and they won 24/11.
Contrary to both of those teams, Jan Johnson, Gordon Moxey, Bob Lamport and skip Maureen Lamport played a very tight game. It was 12-all after nine ends and 18-all after 17 ends, leaving the last four ends to become vitally important. When the going gets tough, the tough get going, and the Garfielders won the first three of those ends to lead by five. They gave up one shot on the last end, but the job was done, winning 23/19.
This great win boosts the side to fourth place on the ladder. They take on ladder leaders Yinnar at home today.
