Hope rises for Garfield bowlers

Garfield won two of three matches this week, providing some hope and promise as the season nears the Christmas break.
Division two: Garfield lost to Traralgon RSL (2) 80/62
Garfield travelled to Traralgon to play on the grass green at RSL. Losing three rinks and a squeaky one-shot win on the fourth saw the side go down by 18 shots.
The team of Graeme Burton, John O'Shea, Bob Lamport and skip Shane Oliver lost 12/24.
Not able to get the hang of the surface, they were 10 shots down before opening their account. After that, they kept up with their opponents to lose by 12 shots.
Les Pumphrey's team, consisting of Geoff Pumphrey, Gerry Fuller and Ron Saunders lost 15/19.
Also trailing early, a committed comeback saw them level at 11-all at the halfway point. A couple of ends went in the home side's favour to give them the win.
The team of Lexi Taylor, Cheryl Breteler, Richard Ross and skip Alan White won 19/18.
Alan's team rollicked out to a 19/8 lead after 15 ends. Looking like they might cover the other three rinks, the wheels fell off and they didn't score again. While their large lead was enough, the bubble had burst.
Stephen Whyte skipped the team of Henry Breteler, Roger Worden and Gary Helmore who lost 16/19.
Down by three shots after two ends, the rest of the game was exactly equal. As a result, Garfield lost by that same three shots.
This loss sweeps Garfield to the bottom of the ladder with a lot of work to do.
Division five: Garfield (2) defeated Yallourn North (2) 65/52
Playing host at Garfield, division side welcomed far away Yallourn North.
The sides sensibly agreed to start play at 11am to get the match completed before the heat set in. This worked in Garfield's favour.
The team of Jan Moxey, Brad Fowler, Helene Newton and skip Gwen Fabris drew 18/18.
Scores were tied five times during the course of the game, including at the end.
The team skipped by Brian Fox and consisting of Rick Sillett, Annette O'Shea and Trevor Peters won 27/13.
It was a tight game until the Garfielders levelled at nine-all after nine ends. From then on, it was a feast for Garfield, powering away to win by 14 shots.
Jasmine O'Shea skipped the team of Frank Prins, Gordon Moxey and Len Preece who lost 20/21.
They were on a rollercoaster all day, with scores up and down. Square at 17-all with two ends to play, each team won one of those ends. However, the visitors gained one more shot for the win.
Garfield sits in fifth, atop a group of three sides on 49 points, after this good result.
Midweek
Garfield travelled to Newborough to play Morwell on Tuesday. They made the most of the opportunity, winning two of the three rinks for an 11-shot win.
Division four: Garfield defeated Morwell (3) 61/50
The team skipped by Gwen Fabris, consisting of Keith Cook, Luke Monckton and Bob Lamport, won 24/13.
On the front foot, Garfield was six shots up before their opponents broke their duck. They went on to win easily by 11 shots.
Gerry Fuller's team, consisting of Annette O'Shea, Cheryl Breteler and Trevor Peters, lost 12/23.
Gerry's team started exactly the same way, leading 6/0. However, the opposition came back to catch them at 10-all, after which Garfield only won one more end.
The team of John O'Shea, Lexi Taylor and Helene Newton, skipped by Malcolm Newham, won 25/12.
Out to a nine-shot lead, Garfield didn't falter as they poured on the shots.
Garfield now move to third on the ladder.
