From playing on the MCG to playing next to a greyhound track.
Collingwood premiership player Dayne Beams made a cameo appearance in Gippsland cricket at the weekend, suiting up for Longwarry Cricket Club.
Beams proved to be a more than handy fill in, helping the Crows' division five side to victory over Warragul at Logan Park (situated next to Warragul Greyhound Racing Club).
Playing in shorts, the 34-year-old whacked two sixes and eight fours opening the batting, retiring on 52 after taking 2/13 off four overs earlier in the day.
The arrangement came about due to a mateship between the children of Longwarry's captain and Beams' kids.
Longwarry Cricket Club president Matthew Aslett said he "couldn't quite believe it" when told Beams was keen for a game.
"I sort of thought to myself 'yeah, sure he is' but then it turned out no, he actually was in. According to the boys he rocked up five minutes before the start of the game and strolled onto the field like any regular Joe," he said.
"I had plenty of messages through the week after we named the team asking if it was the real Dayne Beams."
While the club initially thought Beams' appearance was a one-off, the former Copeland Trophy winner and Merrett-Murray Medallist has reportedly shown interest in coming back, with the Crows set to soon officially register him as their player.
Beams played 177 AFL games for Collingwood and Brisbane Lions from 2009-2020, making the All-Australian team while playing for the former in 2012 and captaining the latter from 2017-2018.
His 2010 Magpies flag was won alongside fellow Gippslanders Dale Thomas (Drouin), Scott Pendlebury (Sale), Leigh Brown (Heyfield) and Jarryd Blair (Wonthaggi).
Current West Coast coach and Traralgon local Andrew McQualter played on the losing St Kilda side, as did Brendon Goddard (Glengarry) and Robert Eddy (Stony Creek).
Beams selflessly auctioned his premiership medal in 2020 to help the bushfire appeal.
