Goannas defeat East Doncaster

After what seemed a long break due to weather cancellations and National Championships, the Gippsland Goannas over 60 cricket team made the trip to Zerbes Reserve in East Doncaster to play the local veterans.

Winning the toss, captain Rino inserted the opposition and opened the bowling with Bernie Symons and Peter Anton.
Symons broke through in the seventh over, and was promptly replaced by Rob Bacchetti. Anton bowled five overs and Rino Metlikovec then took over.
A wicket to Bacchetti either side of drinks had East Doncaster three down at less than three runs per over.
Neil Meredith replaced Metlikovec, who took over wicketkeeping duties from Chris Devent. Bacchetti bowled his eight overs and took 2/24, and Andrew Smith came into the attack. His four overs earned one wicket for just 14 runs.
Meredith bowled eight on the trot for 25 runs, while recruit Andy Slevin bowled two overs, Barrie Nunn two overs for 1/7, Col Carmody one over for 1/2 and Mark Brown one over for eight runs.
The East Doncaster final score was 7/142 after 40 overs. Chris Devent took a catch and effected a run out for the Goannas.
Metlikovec and Devent opened the innings for the Goannas, with the skipper retiring with just 10 runs to his name after six overs, allowing Carmody to come to the crease.
After 10 overs the score had advanced to 36 runs.
Devent was out for 13 in the 13th over, and Rob Taylor joined Col, who was dismissed for 12 in the 16th over. Anton came in and he and Taylor took the score along steadily reaching 2/49 at the drinks break.
After drinks these two worked to increase the scoring rate and the score reached 100 in the 30th over.
Pete was bowled on the first ball of the 31st over for a well made 28 runs.
Mark Brown came and went quickly, as Bacchetti joined Taylor. Taylor retired for 40 in the 35th over for the fourth consecutive time this season, bringing Meredith in to bat.
When Bacchetti was run out at the start of the 36th over the Goannas still needed more than 20 runs to win. Meredith and Symons, with some sensible batting, got the Goannas score to 5/144 in the 39th over, improving the Goannas winning record to four wins from the five games completed so far this season.
The Goannas over 60 team plays Iona at home next Sunday, while the over 70 team will travel to Caulfield to play the strong ACS team on Tuesday 17 December.
The Goannas now practice at the nets at the Duncan Cameron Reserve in Traralgon on a Wednesday evening from about 4:30pm. All new recruits are most welcome, particularly for the over 70 team who occasionally struggle for numbers.
