400 up for Asmussen

by Samuel Laffy
Trafalgar (9/215) def. Drouin (9/109)

John Asmussen celebrated his 400th game for Trafalgar in style, the veteran notching a superb unbeaten 69 that helped the Ships notch a dominant 106-run win over Drouin.
One of the more valued contributors to Trafalgar Cricket Club in their storied history, Asmussen's knock will no doubt be one of the more highly celebrated in recent years.
He combined with Rhain Ross (who struck an excellent 76*) to help Trafalgar post 9/215, with the duo overcoming some testing bowling from Gavin Mills (2/33) and Isaiah Glover (2/12).
The Hawks began their chase in typically hasty fashion, with Remo Graziotin (38) again causing headaches for the new ball bowlers, but once Shane White (3/19) and Brent Claridge (2/4) settled into their spells the writing was on the wall for Drouin – dismissed for 109 in the 22nd over.
Jindivick (8/217) def. Catani (8/161)
Dale Vincent and Thomas Stevenage provided the impetus for Jindivick in their 74-run win over Catani on the weekend, with the duo overcoming a top order collapse that had the Jumping Jacks in an early precarious position.
Archie Purvis was in devastating form with shiny Kookaburra in hand and looked set to run rampant, but Vincent (who struck six fours and five sixes on his way to 68*) quickly put the Cats' bowling attack on the back foot.
Following in Vincent's footsteps, Stevenage (who made an excellent 44) helped carry Jindivick to 8/217.
In reply, Catani's Matthew Finger produced a sterling half century at the top of the order, but he lacked precious little support from his teammates, who found the going tough against tight bowling from Russell Vincent (2/10) and Gracie Sanders (2/13).
Western Park (6/148) def. Garfield-Tynong (153)
Entering the game, many Western Park faithful expressed concerned that a host of outs in the higher grades might make life difficult for the club's Fifth XI, but they needn't have fretted as the Warriors took home a stunning 95-run win over Garfield-Tynong.
On a Logan Park surface that rewarded aggressive intent, the father-son combination of John and Ben Laffy kickstarted the Westen Park innings with a 44-run opening stand that set the tone for the day.
John turned back the clock with some vintage strokeplay, whilst Ben latched onto a series of rakish cuts.
A calamitous mix-up between the wickets curtailed their stand but that enabled Nick Baker (34), James Campbell (who magnificently overcame injury troubles to post 54*), and Jack Sim (30) to flourish, as the Warriors posted a formidable 6/261 from their allotted overs.
The Titans' top order did their best early to match Western Park's boundary-hitting blitz, and for a time it looked as though the run chase might be surprisingly successful.
However, Baker (4/21) and Dayne O'Dwyer (4/39) took advantage of the run rate pressure to make regular breakthroughs and dismissed Garfield-Tynong for 153.
Ellinbank (4/88) def. Warragul (87)
As is his wont, Matt Dare struck an intrepid 47 that helped Ellinbank claim a six-wicket win over Warragul in division five, with the talented all-rounder taking full toll on the Gulls' attack on the small confines of Lardner Recreation Reserve.
The Eagles were only chasing 88 for victory – following some impressive bowling from Will Auldist (3/16), Ben Kelleher (3/11), and Ryan Bosch (2/18) – and after striding to the crease following the early loss of Jake Simpson, Dare set about dispatching the ball with authority.
Six sixes flowed from his blade as he raced to 47, with Jordan Bol (0/52 off 4) in particular feeling the impact of Dare's ball-striking, and after just 12.2 overs Ellinbank had claimed victory.
Yarragon (1/137) def. Neerim District (3/130)
Andy Trewern's return inspired Yarragon to a nine-wicket win over Neerim District on the weekend, as the Panthers made light work of a strong total set by the Stags.
In a curtailed 20-over encounter, Neerim District posted 3/130, with Jamie Gleeson's 52* the highlight of the innings.
His ability to beat the infield and send the ball racing to the fence was on full show, and helped bolster the total.
However, Trewern wasted little time in finding his timing in reply, striking 10 boundaries to quickly put Yarragon in control.
An unbeaten 57 – alongside 28 from Jason Eastham – saw the required runs diminish at a rapid rate, as the Panthers claimed victory at 1/137 from just 16 overs.
