A significant link road at Trafalgar East has been closed to traffic with Baw Baw Shire council saying dry weather was to blame.
Major cracks have appeared on the bitumen surface of Telephone Rd at Trafalgar East that is heavily used by traffic from North and South Canal Rds travelling to Waterloo Rd and Princes Fwy.
Council advised the road had been closed due to "significant cracking and movement in the road."
"Although we know that temporarily closing this road may cause some inconvenience, this closure is for the safety of our community," council said on social media.
Council's community infrastructure director Ben Wood said the road was closed on March 12 for safety reasons and council was looking at possible short term options that would enable its re-opening.
It is also considering longer term restoration of the road. Mr Wood said road faults that needed repairing due to dry conditions were not frequent but did happen when the ground dries and shrinks.
He said council had been monitoring Telephone Rd since early February after it began to deteriorate. Dry spells and wet weather can cause different problems with roads that council has to manage.
The district has received seven successive months of below average rainfall.
