A photograph of the Classic Weaving Mills building in Main South Rd, Drouin.
The weaving mill was opened on Thursday, March 3, 1949 by Minister for Labor Mr A. E. McDonald.
It was described as a modern structure and up-to-date building, with modern machinery and first class amenities, including a basketball (netball) court.
Manager Mr A. Lederman said negotiations began in 1947. When discussing the location, it was his father who suggested locating the factory in Drouin.
Mr Lederman had previously been in business in Carlton, running Classweave Textiles.
Arnold Lederman, along with a cousin, saw the market for a lighter and more colourful fabric. Most factories at this time were geared up to produce heavier fabrics for use during WWII.
The Lederman's also owned the Federal Woollen Mills in Geelong.
The factory was sold to Flora Pak Plastics who opened in 1974.
This iconic building is still instantly recognisable in Main South Rd today and now currently home to The Fitness Factory.
