Snapshot of the past: Gough Whitlam visits

The Labor leader is captured at a civic reception in Warragul flanked by Warragul Shire president Cr Neville Cottrell (left) and Cr Max McCarthy.
Mr Whitlam became Australia's 21st prime minister on December 5, 1972. He is the only prime minister to be dismissed from office, his term abruptly ending on November 11, 1975.
The Gazette reported the presence of Mr Whitlam at Farm World "rocketed the attendance to record heights".
His visit followed the government's decision to withdraw the long-standing superphosphate subsidy to primary producers.
As a result, the Gazette reported "Mr Whitlam had a noisy attendance of thousands, some of whom were there to hear and some to jeer".
A Field Days executive said "I think the Prime Minister got his message over, but there is no denying that a big farming community left him with a message to take back to Canberra."
Mr Whitlam was the only prime minister to grow up in Canberra and was dubbed "the young brolga" when he entered parliament for his 194cm height and imperious bearing.
He died in 2014.
