Snapshot of the past

A photograph of SES volunteers filling sandbags to protect a Trafalgar from flood waters in November 1995.
The SES volunteers include Peter Wood, Jim Hoskins and Darren Bell.
This photograph appeared on the front page of "The Trader" on November 9 as almost continual rainfall across the region caused flash flooding in Trafalgar.
As a result, some people were reportedly stranded in their homes.
The Trafalgar flats area north of the township and Trafalgar East were the worst hit by three days of heavy rain.
The West Gippsland SES was called out Trafalgar to carry out emergency sandbagging in the Seven Mile Rd area. They returned the next day after desperate calls from North Canal Rd residents who faced severe flooding.
SES unit controller Colin Shiels reported most of the flooding was from Shady Creek and drains that were not clearing.
Baw Baw Shire reported about 10 roads closed due to flooding in the area and a few landslips. However, flooding was mostly on properties rather than along roadways.
