A tradesman watched his utility being driven away when it was stolen from the front of a Trafalgar work site.
He later tracked it down to Morwell but was unable to follow it.
Police said the tradesman was working at an address on the Princes Hwy on Monday, September 30.
He reported hearing wheels spinning at about 10.05am before observing his silver 2009 Holden utility drive away.
Whilst the vehicle had been parked outside the site unlocked, the tradesman still had the keys. Police said CCTV captured two people walk past in the timeframe.
The utility, with registration plates "WZF 106", had tools in the back valued at several thousand dollars.
The tradesman reported he located the vehicle in Morwell at 2pm. He gave descriptions of two people and said it had different registration plates.
The female driver was described as in her 20s with long blonde hair. The male passenger was described as Caucasian, in his 20s, dark hair and wearing an orange high-vis jumper.
The utility has a black roof and canopy top. It is possibly displaying registration plates "URA 780".
