It will be a blast from the past at Garfield Primary School later this month as the school is holding a very special reunion, with the opening of a 50-year-old time capsule as the highlight.
The school is encouraging former students, staff and committee members to attend the reunion on November 30. Beginning at 9:30am, past students will be speaking on their memories and good times at the school, before opening the time capsule.
The capsule was created by students from 1972 and filled with things they valued at the time, with specific instructions that it not be opened until the year 2022.
Incredibly, having already planned the day weeks prior, school officials last week found an unopened letter from Donald McGregor, the school's principal in 1972. The letter was written to encourage his 2022 successor, in this case current Garfield Primary School principal Danny Forster, to "conduct an appropriate ceremony" for the opening of the "very valuable" capsule, as well as a request to try and invite as many of the school's 1972 students as possible.
Former students from all year levels are encouraged to attend, particularly anyone who was at the school in 1972, to go along and share their experiences.
In addition, and coincidentally in line with Mr McGregor's wishes, this year's cohort has created its own time capsule in a similar vein, which will not be opened until another 50 years from now. Following the official ceremony, there will be a morning tea and a tour of the current facilities, allowing everyone to see just how far the school has come.
Mr Forster said the school was "really excited" to welcome everyone back and open the time capsule.
"We've had a great interest in attendance so far and we've love to see as many former students, staff and other people associated with the school as possible," he said.
"We're really confident this will be a great celebration of the history of the school, we can't wait to have everyone here."
