Solar system installed to cut costs

A new solar system has been switched on at Warragul Leisure Centre to slash electricity costs and reduce Baw Baw Shire's carbon footprint.

The new 200kW solar system was fully funded by council's Revolving Sustainability Fund.
Baw Baw Shire community infrastructure director Ben Wood said the cost to install the solar system was $411,951, which included sub mains cabling and maintenance walkways.
Whilst not originally part of the $12.8 million stadium project, council said the leisure centre was one of its highest energy users and the system was expected to pay for itself in seven years.
Installed before construction of the two-court stadium and facilities wrapped up last year, the system was recently switched on.
Mr Wood said the project was fully funded by the Resolving Sustainability Fund, a council program that reinvests savings from previous cost-saving initiatives such as solar or LED lighting.
