Record support from emergency relief fund

Gippsland's Emergency Relief Fund outlaid a record $619,500 last year helping local families impacted by natural disasters.
The charity's recently released annual report revealed it assisted 244 families affected by four natural disasters - fires, floods and storms - in all six of Gippsland's local government areas.
Vice-president Nigel Browne said it was the first time in GERF's 45-year history that it had been called on to support such a frequency of disaster emergencies.
He said the amount it disbursed exceeded donations during the year and required it to access reserve funds to ensure all referrals for assistance could be met.
Mr Browne said he was hopeful the generosity of Gippsland people and organisations would come to the fore again to build up the reserve to assist in future disasters.
"We are lucky with the support received from a range of community organisations, companies and individuals as the region faces the challenge of increased frequency and severity of bushfires, floods and storms from climate change".
We need to be ready, he added.
The annual report also highlighted GERF volunteers' increasing community engagement including attending farmers' markets and other events.
A newsletter also has been introduced.
