Providing a voice to youth committee

West Gippsland Healthcare Group youth representative committee members were guest speakers at the annual general meeting.
Ellie Holden, Zara McNair, Mia Wilson and Susan Petrie spoke about their involvement on the youth committee, which has given them a voice and experience on a community focussed organisation.
As the only child-safe accredited health care organisation in Australia, WGHG established the youth representative committee for children and young people to participate in decisions that affected them.
In October 2022, the YRC was launched with its first member and has gown to a committee of six young people.
Ellie said joining the committee had given her an opportunity to "meet extraordinary people" and give her a voice.
"The decision we make at the table go on to help others...this group has given me a way to use my voice to contribute to the community and create positive outcomes," she said.
Mia and Zara said they enjoyed providing feedback on signage around the hospital and welcome packs for patients that were "old and crusty" and needed freshening up.
They said the youth committee had provided them with opportunities to learn and have their voices heard.
