Police praise quick actions

Police have praised the quick actions of residents after a series of fires across the district in the past week.
Having called on community members to be aware of suspicious activity in the area and report fires quickly, several residents did exactly that during the current heatwave.
A soap dispenser in a public toilet and a timber fence nearby were set alight near the Trafalgar Skate Park on Sunday afternoon.
Police said the deliberately lit fires occurred in Depot Lane at about 4.15pm.
A person who noticed smoke coming from the toilets alerted the CFA who extinguished the fires. The dispenser was completely destroyed.
Also on Sunday, a passer-by alerted emergency services to report a man starting a fire near a Warragul bus stop.
Police allege a 49-year-old man from the Ringwood area used a lighter to ignite a small pile of grass in Normanby St at about 10.30am.
The fire was extinguished by the CFA and the man interviewed by police at the scene.
Warragul Police senior sergeant Peter Watson said the fires, started in hot and gusty conditions, could have been dangerous.
He praised those who acted straight away, stating "that's how we catch these firebugs."
And, yesterday afternoon, three separate fires were reported in the Buln Buln East area as temperatures hit 35 degrees.
The fires, continuing a trend concerning local police who suspect a possible firebug in that area, were reported at Old Telegraph Rd East and Ingleman Rd at about 1.30pm.
An off-duty police officer has also has been praised after extinguishing a fire in Queen St Park on Thursday night.
Police allege a group of girls wrapped together a large amount of sparklers, placed them on a wooden table near the playground and ignited them at about 8.30pm.
The girls, who were earlier seen pushing a shopping trolley in Queen St, were seen running to the nearby train station. It is believed they travelled via train towards Drouin.
A 55-year-old Narracan man is expected to receive a court summons for lighting a fire during the fire danger period. Thorpdale-Yinnar CFA was alerted to logs smouldering on a private nature strip at McDonalds Trk at about 11.30am on Friday.
Police were called to negotiate after attempts by CFA volunteers to enter the private property and extinguish the smouldering logs were halted by the property owner and three dogs.
A lightning strike may have caused a grass fire at a Neerim South property on Friday night.
Located in a remote area not accessible by foot, the owner of the Wagner Rd property located the fire at about 7pm and extinguished it before the CFA arrived. A large gum tree struck by lightning a week before may have caused the blaze. It is believed the tree may have been smouldering for a week before a large limb broke off and started the grass fire, burning an area of about 20m by 10m.
Police said the CFA and property owner worked together to knock the tree down to ensure any further smouldering was extinguished before the weekend heatwave.
A pile of construction waste caught fire at an unoccupied house in Warragul on Saturday afternoon.
Police said it was unknown how the pile was ignited at the Burke St address at about 1pm.
A contractor was alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm, as it quickly spread to the front of the house. It caused damage to the front façade, plastic cladding, weatherboards and front porch. However, no structural damage occurred.
