New fire danger rating system
1 min read

Connecting the fire danger rating system with a call to action is an important part of changes rolling out nationwide this fire season.
Victoria's fire danger rating system has switched to the new Australian Fire Danger Rating System, which is the same in every state and territory across Australia.
Instead of six danger ratings, the new system only has four: moderate, high, extreme, and catastrophic.
The changes follow a community survey, which found the majority of Australians did not understand the previous system.
According to Emergency Management Victoria, the new system is based on new technology and research that improves the ability to accurately predict fire behaviour and potential threat to the community.
The new system takes into account eight different fire fuels, instead of two.
This has expanded the fire behaviour models to forest, grassland, savanna, spinifex, shrubland, mallee health, pine and buttongrass - six of which are present in Victoria.
New signage is being installed this month and stickers will be placed over existing signs to promote the new system.
Emergency services are preparing for a higher-risk weather season and encouraging Victorians to start actively preparing as well.
Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp said the outlook suggested the state will have a wet start to spring and people should start preparing for floods and storms in the same way they prepare for potential fires.
"What is the plan you are putting in place for yourself, your family, pets and livestock?"
"As part of your plan, think about the clear triggers and when you will enact your plan," he said.
Victorians can access up-to-date Fire Danger Ratings and other emergency information on the VicEmergency website and VicEmergency app.
