Mountain bike track sought for Drouin

A new councillor has declared youth voices matter in advocating for a mountain bike track to be created in Drouin.

Cr Ben Lucas successfully moved a notice of motion calling for a report on track options at a recent council meeting.
The report will include possible locations, estimated costs and a project plan for a new mountain bike track with jumps specifically for Drouin.
Supporting a pump track proposed for Warragul, Cr Lucas said kids of Drouin had approached him whilst doing tricks and jumps in Civic Park. He believed both cycling projects were required and could act as shared amenities.
"There's a real need and a real groundswell for recreational activities like this," he said.
"These kids have a voice and it should be heard. They've voiced very loudly that we need to put some cycling infrastructure in."
Cr Lucas said BMX, skateboarding and scooters have all been popular over the years, noting "the current craze is mountain bikes".
Cr Tricia Jones supported the report, stating it was important to have valid and up-to-date information to make future decisions.
"It's really important that we continue to look at opportunities," Cr Jones said.
Cr Jess Hamilton said a facility would encourage kids to get outdoors and engage in physical activity.
She said mountain biking helped motor skills, social skills and reduced anxiety.
"If it was up to me, there'd be one in every town," Cr Hamilton declared. "I think Longwarry should be next."
Cr Adam Sheehan said a track wouldn't only be limited to kids and could be utilised by the entire family.
"It's a great opportunity for connection, for fitness for bigger kids like myself that still ride a bike," Cr Sheehan said, echoing calls for "one in every town".
Cr Paul Pratt said he could see how appreciative local youth were when Cr Lucas talked to them at Civic Park.
"That's what we are about," Cr Pratt said. "Let's see what this report shows, hopefully it's not too expensive to do and we can tick it off."
Officers will prepare a report on the matter ahead of the April council meeting.
