More social housing for Gippsland

Plans to build another 175 social and affordable housing in Gippsland have been announced by the state government.

Premier Jacinta Allan and Housing Minister Harriet Shing said the new homes in Gippsland were among 1300 that were planned to be built in regional areas at a cost of $1 billion.
No details were released about where or when the houses will be built although Baw Baw Shire was included in an Inner Gippsland region earmarked for 110 of the extra houses.
Inner Gippsland covers Baw Baw, Latrobe City, Bass Coast and South Gippsland local government areas.
The announcement stated 180 new and upgraded houses had already been completed in regional Victoria comprising 130 existing homes that had been upgraded and 50 transitional housing homes to rapidly house people experiencing homelessness.
Regional advocacy body One Gippsland welcomed the announcement with East Gippsland and Wellington shires to get 65 new houses in addition to those planned for the Inner Gippsland area.
Spokesperson and chief executive officer of Wellington Shire David Morcom said Gippsland had some of the highest rates of family violence and homelessness in the state and were key contributors to a high demand for social housing across the region.
He said in 2022 there were almost 4000 applicants for social housing in Gippsland with 2268 of them priority access applicants.
Ms Allan and Ms Shing also announced actions to speed up planning approvals by regional and rural councils with the introduction of a regional planner cadetship program and establishment of regional planning hubs that would place planning experts with councils.
The latest announcements follow that of former premier Daniel Andrews in September 2023 who said "Victoria's Housing Statement - the Decade Ahead 2024-2034" set a target to build 800,000 houses over the 10 years of which 152,000 would be in regional and rural areas.
He said the rollout of social and affordable homes would be rapidly accelerated.
