The federal government has allocated an extra $55 million to improve communications in areas vulnerable to natural disasters.
Regional advocacy group One Gippsland, that has been advocating for extra funding in Black Spot areas, said Gippsland had suffered from almost 40 disaster events - bushfires, floods and storms - over the past 10 years.
Spokesperson Cr Scott Rosetti said communications in the region needed investment and policy shifts to ensure better and more resilient mobile services during widespread outages from natural disasters.
He said the government's announcement reflected recommendations One Gippsland made in a review last year.
They included back-up power supplies for telecommunications infrastructure in regional, rural and remote areas.
"Reliable emergency communications needed to be activated at any time and were an essential tool for disaster planning, management and recovery," Cr Rosetti stated.
Suggestions for areas and projects to be funded under the Mobile Black Spot funding project can be submitted to a project noticeboard until February 7, he added.
He said One Gippsland's submission had said telecommunications should be recognised as an essential service able to meet continuity standards during prolonged and widespread outages.
It is particularly important for Gippsland that draws many holiday makers that need to be reached, Cr Rosetti said.
