Matildas inspire young stars

From copying player hairstyles to hosting watch parties, local female soccer is enjoying the "buzz" of Australia hosting the FIFA Women's World Cup.
And, with the Matildas making the round 16 stage last night, clubs are now preparing for an influx of girls wanting to replicate their Australian heroes and hit the pitch.
"It's very, very inspiring," Gippsland United junior girls coordinator Felicity Wilson said. "I think the girls see the quality that the Matildas play. It's really inspiring them to go to that next level."
United's womens and girls teams came together for a "watch party" during the qualifying rounds. Now, young girls replicating the Matilda hairstyles can be seen running around Baxter Park on weekends.
"It's such a buzz," Ms Wilson said.
Although local soccer seasons are close to concluding, she said a few enquiries were starting to come through.
"It's coming," Ms Wilson said. "We're planning for it."
The club is currently awaiting news on a grant application to enable a girls' summer competition to run, an exciting initiative designed to build upon the World Cup hype.
It was only four years ago that United got together its first girls team.
"The club feels really strongly about getting the female presence at the club equal with the male," Ms Wilson said. "We're getting there."
She aims to have three girls teams, up from the current two, as well as girls playing at the NPL (National Premier League) level.
Whilst MiniRoos participation is evenly split, many girls move onto dancing or netball once competition soccer kicks in. However, now given the option, Ms Wilson believes girls and their parents are more open to continuing soccer. And, they are also hoping to draw newcomers to the sport as well.
Ms Wilson said United's senior players were excited by the enthusiasm of its two youth teams, seeing the talent on offer and eagerly awaiting their progression through to the women's ranks.
