A light-hearted presentation of a gift was not meant as a farewell gesture by Liberal Member for Narracan Wayne Farnham to outgoing Labor Premier Daniel Andrews last Tuesday.
Mr Farnham gave one of his personalised promotional bottle openers to Mr Andrews soon after the former premier held a media conference at Parliament House and unaware that he was resigning as the state's leader and a member of parliament the following day.
"If I knew he was resigning I'd have given him a slab" (of stubbies/cans), a jovial Mr Farnham told The Gazette.
He said he and Mr Andrews had crossed paths briefly on their way into the house on Tuesday and had a pleasant 30-second social chat.
When they again crossed paths soon after the now ex-premier's media conference, and when the bottle opener was presented, Mr Farnham said he still had no idea of the resignation.
The gift was accepted with good humour.
