Kestigan to join Destination Gippsland

Baw Baw Shire director Mark Kestigian has been endorsed to join the Destination Gippsland board as a director.

Councillors unanimously appointed Mr Kestigian, who is the shire's economic, development, arts and advocacy director, at the recent council meeting.
The position on the skills-based board was previously held by shire chief executive officer Mark Dupe before his resignation in December.
An officer report said council currently contributes $42,000 annually to support the running of Destination Gippsland, the regional tourism board for eastern Victoria.
Established in 2008 with the support of Visit Victoria, Parks Victoria and six councils of Gippsland, Destination Gippsland is a not-for-profit public company.
The report said the appointment would "ensure continued representation for Baw Baw Shire as Destination Gippsland continues working towards improved tourism outcomes across Gippsland".
With traditional industries of farming and timber under pressure, Cr Adam Sheehan said tourism had been flagged for a long time as something to fill the economic void.
He said tourism shaped the identity of several small townships and it was a key that Baw Baw maintained its Gippsland identity as it grew.
"It's going to be very easy to get lost into a metropolitan lifestyle," Cr Sheehan said. "It's pretty important and vital we have a representative there (on the board)."
Cr Kate Wilson said Destination Gippsland was an important board for our region.
Cr Wilson said Mr Kestigian would be "a great addition to that board" and "it's great we can be there for tourism."
