A third independent candidate has joined the federal election race for Monash.
The election date, due no later than May 17, is yet to be announced but already eight candidates have indicated their nominations for the seat of Monash, and there could still be more.
But The Nationals will not be one of them, with the party confirming last week it would not be fielding a candidate.
Pauline Hanson's One Nation candidate Kuljeet Kaur Robinson and independent Robert Durkacz are the latest to indicate their intention to stand.
They join Liberal Mary Aldred; the ALP's Tully Fletcher; independents Deb Leonard and sitting member Russell Broadbent; Greens candidate Terrence Steele; and Family First party's Geoff Dethlefs.
Mr Broadbent, who retained the seat for the Liberal Party in 2022, resigned from the party and sat in parliament as an independent after failing to win endorsement by the Liberals at the upcoming election.
Under an agreement by the Liberal and Nationals coalition, which enables both to put forward candidates if neither has a sitting member in an electorate, the Nationals could have put forward a candidate to stand alongside the Liberal's endorsed nomination Ms Aldred.
But last week The Nationals announced it would not be fielding a candidate in Monash.
Announcing his intention to stand as an independent yesterday, Mr Durkacz said he wanted to send a strong message to government to take a stand against the Trump administration.
He said what was going on in America concerned him and the current list of candidates were not addressing it as an issue or taking the message to Canberra.
"Our government has to be very honest with the American people that they are heading down the wrong track," he said, concerned about the impact of Trump policy on the western alliance.
"The extremity of this situation has prompted me to do this," he said.
Mr Durkacz lives between Brunswick and Cape Woolamai.
Pauline Hanson's One Nation candidate Ms Robinson said she was committed to protecting Australian jobs, industry, agriculture and manufacturing and had a deep appreciation of the country's natural heritage.
She said the destruction of Australian manufacturing had been one of the biggest betrayals of our country.
Eight candidates stood in Monash in the 2022 election.
