Dead cattle investigated

Agriculture Victoria is investigating a number of dead cattle found on a Longwarry property on Thursday.
The Gazette was notified of the cattle by a passing motorist who also reported the incident to the RSPCA.
Agriculture Victoria confirmed it was "aware of the situation at Longwarry and the matter is currently under investigation."
Agriculture Victoria was unable to comment on details.
"Agriculture Victoria treats animal welfare matters very seriously and responds to all allegations in accordance with relevant legislation and departmental procedures," the government agency said.
Baw Baw Shire also confirmed it was aware of the matter.
"Council has received a report regarding this matter and is actively assisting Agriculture Victoria, the responsible authority of the investigation. As it is an active and ongoing investigation, we are unable to comment further at this time," planning and development director Luke Connell said.
The welfare of animals in Victoria is protected by the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Agriculture Victoria will proceed with a prosecution if it is determined there is a reasonable prospect of a conviction and a prosecution is in the public interest.
