Construction of a new $3.1 million pavilion will begin soon in Yarragon.
Cr Brendan Kingwill said it would be "a very sad day" when the existing clubrooms, built in the 1970s and extended in the 80s, were pulled down. He said of the walls, "if they could talk, they could tell you many stories."
However, Cr Kingwill said "it's outgrown its use, it's just come to end of life."
Construction will start at Dowton Park - home to the Yarragon Football Club, Yarragon Junior Football Club, Yarragon Netball Club and Yarragon Cricket Club - in January.
It follows Baw Baw Shire councillors unanimously awarding a $3,102,482 tender to Kubale Constructions during this month's council meeting.
Expected to take 15 months, the estimated completion date is March 2026.
An officer report described the existing clubrooms as having "significant building defects", not meeting all access or female friendly requirements and not suitable for the growing Yarragon community.
The $3.1 million pavilion is central to an overall $3.96 million upgrade project at the Market St site.
The pavilion design features social rooms, two changerooms and amenities, kitchen, bar, umpires' room, office, trainers' room, first aid room and storage as well as public toilets.
As well as the new pavilion and demolition of the existing clubrooms, the overall project also includes construction of new coaches' box and timekeepers' room, switchboard and electrical works, new stairs and access ramp as well as carparking.
Ratepayers will contribute $1.55 million towards the project. The Federal Government has chipped in $1.79 million via the "Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program" and the state government added a further $250,000.
However, an additional $365,000 will be required to "deliver the full scope of the project", the officer report said. It proposes using a masterplan implementation program allocation from council's 2025/26 budget to address this shortfall.
The report states five tenders were assessed before Kubale Constructions was selected. The company scored highly overall, is a reputable contractor who has completed previous works of this scope for council and meets the capacity and capability requirements, it added.
It stated works would be undertaken whilst minimising disruption to other facilities onsite, including the netball pavilion, oval, car park and existing cricket/football pavilion.
Cr Kingwill congratulated the previous council on securing the grants required.
"It's great to see that some of the smaller towns are coming up to scratch with the others areas, and I look forward to rolling this out across the shire," he said.
Cr Danny Goss said it was excellent news for the Yarragon community and would complement the recent oval upgrade.
He congratulated Kubale Constructions who recently delivered the Warragul Leisure Centre with "no trouble there at all."
"A big project for council to oversee in the next 12 months," Cr Goss said. "The community itself, I think, is the winner here."
Cr Paul Pratt declared a conflict of interest.
