Retired St Paul's Anglican Grammar School student Norman McLennan has been remembered as a man dedicated to the community.
On November 11, Norm was pursuing his hobby of road cycling in Pakenham when he was struck by a car. He was unable to be revived at the scene. Ironically, he had bravely fought throat cancer only to become a road statistic.
Norman Arthur McLennan was born on January 24, 1953. He grew up in Berwick and attended Caulfield Grammar School. He chose primary teaching as a career.
The last stage of his career began when he was appointed as one of two teachers to launch the new junior school at St Paul's Anglican Grammar School, Warragul, in 1997.
It was at that time that he developed his interest in Kiwanis International, an organisation dedicated to assisting children. Norm also became involved in the Tournament of Minds, eventually becoming an adjudicator, a position he maintained following his retirement.
Many teachers across Eastern Victoria will remember Norm for his support of the Vicspell spelling competition. Progressing from a committee member in 2006, he soon took an active role as a judge and advocate.
Norm would tell competitors that he was an 'awful speller' but they should take on the challenge of competing. In his younger years, he would challenge himself to compete in athletics and cycling. He delighted in the admission of one secondary student, "I don't play sport so this is the one chance I have to represent my school."
In 2024, Norm attended every zone final from San Remo to Paynesville, and the state final in Traralgon.
After his death many remembered Norm for his kind and generous nature and his fun sense of humour.
In 2025 the Vicspell year six state championship trophy will become the N. A. McLennan Memorial trophy.
Norm is survived by his wife Karen, son Nicholas and daughter Laura, as well as grandchildren Billy and Bobbi.
