"Green drought" warning as fire restrictions date set

The risk of grass fires during a "green drought" period is top of mind for fire agencies this summer.

With grasslands curing earlier than normal, fire restrictions will be introduced in Baw Baw Shire from Monday, December 9 at 1am.
CFA district nine acting assistant chief fire officer Ben McKie said grass areas held a higher fire risk this summer.
"There is superficial greening up but we've got concerns around the underlying dryness," Mr McKie said.
He said the recent heatwave which saw Warragul temperatures hit 35 degrees, followed by humid conditions, did not influence the decision to introduce the fire danger period.
However, it was influenced by variable rainfall and drier patterns across the Gippsland region in recent months.
"We've been taking measurements for quite some time and comparing with previous years," Mr McKie said.
