John Delzoppo dies

Former Member for Narracan and Buln Buln Shire Councillor John Delzoppo died on Saturday, aged 92.

A retired pharmacist from Neerim South, Mr Delzoppo served as Member for Narracan for 14 years between 1982 and 1996, 20 years as councillor of Buln Buln Shire between 1966 and 1986, and served on numerous community committees.
The local political figure was part of the Liberal Party stronghold that has held Narracan throughout the seat's history, with his victory in 1982 retaining the seat following Jim Balfour's retirement.
He was awarded an Order of Australian Medal in 2009 for his service to the Victorian Parliament, local government and Neerim community.
Mr Delzoppo and his wife Beth moved to Neerim South on Boxing Day 1954, operating the first pharmacy in the town for 30 years before selling in 1985.
Speaking to the Gazette in 2009 following the awarding of his OAM, Mr Delzoppo said moving to Neerim South was "the most fortunate thing that ever happened to us really."
He was Buln Buln shire president on three occasions between 1971 and 1979, delegate to the Municipal Association of Victoria from 1979 to 1983, and was awarded Honorary Freeman of Buln Buln Shire in 1994.
As well as serving as inaugural president of the Neerim South High School council, Mr Delzoppo was life member and past president of the Neerim District Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, past president of the Central Gippsland Regional Planning Authority interim committee, former commissioner of the Neerim South Waterworks Trust and Noojee Waterworks Trust, former Gippsland representative of the Latrobe Valley Water and Sewerage Board, inaugural chairman of Westernport Catchment Coordinating Group and former senior vice president of the Victorian Bush Nursing Association.
Mr Delzoppo also was Shadow Minister for Transport (1983-1984), Local Government (1984-1985), Water Resources and Property and Services (1985-1987).
Before his retirement from politics, Mr Delzoppo was Speaker of the Legislative Assembly in the Jeff Kennett government from 1992 to 1996.
Member for Narracan Wayne Farnham said Mr Delzoppo was well regarded by both the Liberal and Labor parties while he was Speaker of the House.
"He always worked professionally, and tirelessly for the community of Narracan," Mr Farnham said.
Mr Delzoppo was married to his wife Beth for 69 years, having met her at pharmacy college in Melbourne.
They had four children, Ian, Lindsay, Clare, and Anne and nine grandchildren, Emma, Amy, Sophie, Cathy, Nick, Elly, Evan, Alex, and Sarah,
Mr Delzoppo also was much loved "old grandpa" of seven great-grandchildren, Zara, Luca, Alba, Arthur, Winnie, Maverick, and Charlie.
